First of all, reading books is an invariable trait that all successful people have. Reading also gives us exposure, improves our knowledge and widens our vision and our mind evolves throughout the process transforming us into a better person than the day before. I learned this a little late but thankfully I realized this now better than later.
Now that we have established the importance of reading books, the selection of books could be done based on your interests and the review of fellow readers. I would suggest starting from your area of interest at first which would rekindle your spirit of reading. However, try reading books of wide diaspora later on and experiment with it. You may even find several new interests on the way.
My preference of reading books would go like this - 1) Paper books 2) e-books 3) audio books based on the availability and other factors like the price of the book, eye-strain, ability to focus, the feel and satisfaction. Paper books, e-books, audio books - all are fine as long as you can focus, grasp and get the most out of it.
TWO APPROACHES OF READING BOOKS:
There are two main approaches of reading books. They are
- Reading a limited number of books in a fixed time-frame (year or month) but spending more quality time with them letting the knowledge sink in your mind and applying it in your life. This approach is best suited when you are trying to learn new skills.
- Reading a huge number of books in a fixed time-frame (year or month) spending only limited time with a single book and moving on to the next book without letting all of the knowledge stick in. This approach is best suited when you are trying to gain wisdom, insights and better your thought process and the mindset.
MY SUGGESTION:
But I would suggest you go for the second way of reading multiple books. This gives you a wider exposure to things and not every author is fully correct in their views. So if you limit yourself to certain books, you will be surrounded by only the views of those authors and the bias they may have had in those books gets into you. You have to take the good and leave the bad from them. A wider range of books will impart a wider perspective of the world and the life itself in you. They will help you to evolve your mind to a higher level of consciousness.
You may ask how can we absorb and apply the knowledge learned through those books if you spend only a limited time in them. My answer to that question is that you are reading a huge volume of books and exposing yourself to so much knowledge. You just assume that all that knowledge is absorbed by you and gets used by you at the right time when needed. Also, you can always re-read the books which are very good and are hugely impactful to reinforce the knowledge learned from them.
If you are just starting out like me, it will be better to read 1 book per month (12 books per year) eventually increasing it to 1 book per week (approx. 50 books a year). There are millions of books with the infinite knowledge contained within them. Even reading 1 book a day cannot cover that huge ocean of knowledge in books as we only have a finite number of days for learning the infinite knowledge in the universe.
